On Monday morning new faces appeared to Green Camp. Jane’s class made frogs that jump!! Rebecca and I were helped in Jane’s room so we didn’t know what was happening in the other two classes. Ask your children at home what they’ve been learning.
Monday was the first day that Mary, our cook was not and wont be for the rest of the summer. She left because her parents are very sick. All of the campers were sad and disappointed.
On Monday afternoon Green Camp went to Dolph park. There were three groups. One was going on a hike. Another group used nets to catch water insects. The last group was with Dave, we made fishing poles  out of sticks and Dave’s fishing wire . There was so MANY MOSQUITOES. Kids were complaining! Some people at the came like me got over 40 bites from the little mosquitoes , but me Rebecca got only 3 bites haha Emma!! tomorrow we are going fishing read the next blog page to find out!!

Week 5 (City Critters)

Monday by Emma
On Monday, new green campers arrived to Green Camp. I was excited to meet each and everyone of them. That morning Jane’s class chose a city critter to research on. It was fun to help the children research on their critter. Will’s class made imaginary animals. I wasn’t in that class because I was helping Jane’s class.
That afternoon, Jane’s class went to grandpa Don’s to jump on the trampoline. Fun!! They also took a tour around the woods. I wasn’t on that field trip but, I was at Barton Dam. It was really fun. When the kids went across the bridge, they could see five or six carp. That was really cool. I saw a little turtle. From above, I could see that it might have been a painted turtle. Yesterday was fun!

Tuesday by Emma
On Tuesday morning, Jane’s class finished researching their critter. The junior naturalists read to the kids. Fun! The kids made models made out of homemade clay. I helped make it. Some models were the habitats of the critters.
That afternoon, Paul McCormick came to show off his animals. I didn’t see his performance but I heard kids laughing from down the hall. The junior naturalists worked on the chicken coop. We are almost done! I am not sure what the other groups did that day though. I had a blast yesterday!

Thursday by Emma
On Thursday morning, Jane’s class looked at animal skins and bones. Some of the bones were deer legs, deer skulls, and deer antlers. There were also oxen horns. Will’s class finished painting their interesting creatures.

Week 4 ("Do Over")

Monday AM 7/18 by Emma
On Monday, new Green Camp kids arrived. That morning, kids met other kids and met other teachers. For the first morning project, the kids designed a 3-dementional package. This project is called the egg drop. You probably know how its done though. The rules were as little packing in the shape as possible, the maximum size of the package had to be seven inches, and the materials you had to use had to be bio-degratable. That sounded fun until I heard that the junior naturalists had to have the max of six inches. It wasn’t that bad, I wanted a little challenge. I saw that a lot of kids used cubes as there shape. I didn’t have a problem with that but I thought that maybe kids wanted a challenge. I had fun packing the package and checking if the egg would fit or not. I am excited to see if my egg will break or not.

Monday 7/18/11 PM by Rudy
“everybody listen up” yells mr brown “its time to calm down...and start the activity”
everyone scurries to their seats smiles and jiber jaber fill the room! Theres kids
putting toys and books away. “Can everyone use there indoor voices please”
after a sec or two they were settled down. after some talking about safety and
common sense [like to use a tool like its suppose to be used].

inside kids were unscrewing old fans, old projectors, printers and lots of stuff!
outside there was the bigger stuff like vacuums, big fans and old motors...
thats when you can use hammers! but of course with goggles and a hard hat with
adults permission. kids were just pounding away  it was so much fun!!!!

Tuesday AM 7/19 by Emma
On Tuesday morning, Green camp dropped there eggs during the egg drop. It was really fun to observe all the different shapes people picked to put there egg in. The results surprised me, only three groups had a dry egg. Most of the shapes that rattled broke. I thought that was very interesting. When my shape was tested from forty feet above. Mine and Rudy’s were wet eggs. But, I learned from that. Yesterday morning was fun.

Wednesday PM by Emma
On our field trip, we all pitched in to pick up garbage around the school. Because of the weather, we couldn’t go to Dolph Park to pick up trash. It was so hot yesterday I felt like I was burning. We weighed the trash. Our results were around fourteen pounds! Wowee. There were three stations kids could go. One was taking apart smaller objects like fans, and printers. The second station was with Dave, kids could take apart bigger items like vacuums cleaners, and microwaves. The third station was watching Wall-e. The junior naturalists were busy making a chicken coop. We are still busy making it, but it looks really cool. Yesterday afternoon was really fun but sweaty.

Week 3 (Green Camp Rocks)

Monday by Emma
7/11/11

On Monday, all of the classes learned about the three rock categories, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Will’s class was split up into groups and researched on a category. I liked how many facts everyone found.
For the field trip, we all stayed here but, we all got to polish rocks by hand. Everyone’s hands hurt that day. It took one hour to finish all of the steps! First, we all used sand paper and rubbed for fifteen to twenty minutes. Next, we used a finer sand paper. Finally, we used jean fabric and used this white powder. My hands were stiff after all of the steps.

7/12/11

On Tuesday, Green Adventures Camp went to the Waterloo, Gravel Pit. What a blast! Kids found cool rocks and some fossils. Yesterday was very warm. There were sweaty heads everywhere. At the gravel pit, one camper discovered a turtle that had be dead for a long time.
Yesterday, the older class was learning about volcanoes. They discovered how volcanoes erupt and why volcanoes erupt. For an example, Will used sparkling water and shook up the bottle. When he took off the cap, it was like the bottle was going to explode. That was very exciting.
All of the classes started making crystals using some type of salt water. It sounds fun!

Wednesday by Emma
7/13/11

On Wednesday, Green Adventures Camp, did a fun, edible activity. This week the teachers are teaching Green Camp about rocks so, the activity was Metamorphic Munchies. Jane made rice crispy treats with layers of toffee, m&m, and raisins. Yum! the kids went through different processes of pressure before they could eat it.
Green Camp, stayed here and was split into two groups. One group was with John, John’s group went on a walk. Dave’s group stayed and sorted rocks. Some kids chose rocks, they cut, grinded, and polished rocks. That was really fun.

Thursday 7/14/11 by Emma

On Thursday, Will’s class went outside to the woods. The class dug for minerals and layers in the ground. The kids also looked and collected some sort of object to create a fossil. That sounded really fun!!
On the field trip, Green Adventures Camp went to Raynor’s Farm. That was really fun. Green Camp was split into three groups. One group was with Dave, kids were harvesting sugar snap peas. That was really fun. Dave also chose some kids to plant onions. John’s group had a little campfire and cooked some food on it. I tried a banana pepper. My eyes started watering, my tongue felt like it was on fire. That was the worst feeling ever! Jane’s group was observing her bees. We got to put on bee suits. It was hot in those. Yesterday was a really exciting field trip!
